Hello Everyone!

It has been an outstanding start to this inaugural school year at ECHS and I can honestly say that we have a great freshmen class, full of students who are intelligent, motivated, energetic and spirited. It is a joy to work with each and every one of them.

As we come to the end of our very first quarter, I want to let you all know some important information:

Firstly, Congratulations to those students who made the A/B Honor roll for quarter one!!!! This was a challenging time of adjustment for most, but these students overcame many challenges and persevered, and we are very proud of their achievements! In celebration of their outstanding efforts, we will be rewarding them (in the very near future) with either an ice-cream social or a pizza party (based on their popular vote), along with some well deserved recreational time. It is sure to be a great time of celebration and fellowship with other, high achieving students!

Secondly, all students must keep in mind that his/her 1st quarter grade represents 40% of their semester Grade Point Average (GPA), so if a student has had a difficult 1st quarter, he/she really needs to increase his/her efforts in this next quarter, so as to maximize the average for his/her overall semester grade. I have been conducting interim deficiency meetings with those students who have been identified as having difficulties/poor grades (at interim time). These students have been counseled regarding ways to improve their study habits, time management and course grades and we have conducted many parent/teacher conferences to assist these students as well. The first quarter ends on October 12th and official report cards will be mailed out the week of October 26th, in accordance with Charlotte County Public Schools. Students will be bringing home an unofficial grade report, on October 21st, so be sure to preview that. You also have the option of previewing grades at gradebookwizard.com. Keep in mind that teachers will continue to update their grades after October 21st, but the report you receive on October 21st represent the grades you will see on your student’s official report card. After receiving the unofficial grade report, if you feel that a parent/teacher conference is indicated, please do not hesitate to contact me and a meeting will be arranged. Our standard days/times for parent conferences are Monday – Friday at 2:00 or 2:20pm.

Thirdly, if a student feels that they are putting forth 100% effort and are still struggling, we have numerous opportunities for tutoring (in addition to our advising time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), and each student should be proactive in seeking out such help. An informational letter was sent out to those students who were identified as possibly being in need of tutoring. Our tutor, Mr. Howland, is conducting study skills groups with specified students and I lead an organizational skills improvement group. Parents, if you are interested in either of these groups, or if you would like more information about other tutoring opportunities, please feel free to e-mail or call me.

Fourthly, as part of the semester average, there will be a semester exam, which is cumulative (representing all information learned since the beginning of school). These exams will occur prior to the holiday break. Shortly, students should begin thinking about their plan for studying for each of these exams and map out that strategy, using their planner. There is no question that there will be an immense amount of information that they will be required to recall on these exams and simply trying to study the night before a semester exam, will not yield the best exam grade. The semester exams will account for 20% of a student’s overall semester grade (this is the grade that is recorded on official transcripts) so the exam could be a, “make or break,” event. Proper planning and preparation is critical, in order to have a strong semester finish.

Dual Enrollment Update: We are working with Edison State College to possibly launch our very first dual enrollment course, in the second semester. Plans are tentative, but it is important to note that, in order to be eligible to participate in a dual enrollment course, a student MUST have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, at the end of semester one. There are other determining factors involved, but without the GPA requirement met, the student will be ineligible to participate, so students need to continue to do their absolute best, every day.

In closing, I’d like to remind students and parents that I have an open-door policy and I am available for assistance (academic and otherwise), whenever the need arises. Please feel free to e-mail me or call me, should you have any questions/concerns or need assistance of any kind.

Looking forward to continued success in the second quarter,

April 3, 2009

PUNTA GORDA — Edison Collegiate High School has reached another milestone in becoming a public school by conducting a lottery selection of applications for the charter school’s inaugural ninth-grade class.

The maximum number of students who could be accepted into the class was 100. Because 139 applications were received by the March 20 deadline, the information technology department at the Lee Campus of Edison State College was charged with orchestrating the application lottery.

The top 100 students received a phone call explaining that they were selected and their acceptance letter was mailed out last week. The letter contained a commitment form and a self-addressed return envelope, which is due back to the school today. As of Thursday afternoon, Principal Tammi Harvey has received between 85 and 90 commitments. “It tells me these kids really want to be here,” Harvey said. “I feel like we’re a school now. I have names and I have faces.”

If a selected student decides not to attend the collegiate high school, his spot will be taken by a student on the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.

Currently, there are 46 students on the waiting list, as applications have continued to be submitted to the school. In addition to finding out who will be in the student body, the school has been interviewing applicants for the guidance counselor position. Also, advertisements for teachers will be posted on the college’s Web site at https://jobs.edison.edu beginning next week.

MURDOCK — Edison Collegiate High School cleared its final legal hurdle Tuesday when the Charlotte County School Board unanimously approved the charter school’s contract.

A charter school is a public school run by private individuals or groups who have contracted with a school district.

The approved contract outlines the relationship and the responsibilities between the district and Edison State College Charlotte Campus, which hopes to create a rigorous four-year curriculum for students so they receive both a high school diploma and an associate degree upon graduation.

Although the board did not discuss the nearly 40-page contract during the required public hearing, they took the time to voice well wishes to the college moments before voting.

“This gives our students another option, and it may not be for everyone, but it may be for some,” said School Board member Andrea Messina. “It’s in the best interest of the students of Charlotte County to have options and parents to have options. I look forward to working with Edison and I think it’s going to be a fine partnership.

The first class of 100 freshmen is scheduled to begin school in August.

As a way to help families learn more about the school and the application process, three informational meetings have been planned at the Charlotte Campus, located at 26300 Airport Road, Punta Gorda.

The first of these meetings will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in room SA 117. To RSVP, visit http://echs.edison.edu or call 941-637-5673.

We are pleased to advise you that the review process for Edison State College’s charter school application is progressing. A special school board meeting and public hearing is planned for October 7, to result in a decision concerning issuance of a charter. CCPS will announce the meeting time. In the meantime, Edison State College and CCPS staff are working together to assure all issues are adequately addressed prior to the final vote.

The next step in the process after the charter is granted is to negotiate a detailed contract between Edison State College and CCPS to manage school operations. The contract provides a specific plan to manage reporting, testing and other State requirements for public schools. A very exciting move is that the school principal’s position is now advertised on the College’s website, and a search committee looks forward to reviewing applications by the end of the month.

The ECHS charter application states that the purpose of ECHS is to provide a quality academic experience for high school students seeking the challenge of high academic standards, rigorous curricula, and college-level study at a small innovative high school. The four-year curriculum will provide the opportunity for students to complete a high school diploma and an associate degree simultaneously. Two programs of study will be offered: the Collegiate Program and the Pre-Collegiate Program. Students qualifying for the Collegiate Program would provide test scores and other evidence indicating they are prepared to succeed in college level work. The Pre-Collegiate Program is designed to serve students who have not yet demonstrated college readiness standards.

The application envisions admitting a class of 100 students per year for four consecutive years, beginning with students eligible for admission to grade nine in Fall 2009-2010. It is anticipated that each succeeding year, ECHS would admit an additional class of 100 9th grade students, and cap enrollment at 400 students, distributed among grades 9 through 12. Should the charter be granted, ECHS will begin accepting applications in early January 2009 for its first 9th grade class.

If you would like to read details regarding the plan, a copy of the ECHS charter application may be accessed at http://www.edison.edu/echs/echs_application.pdf. A supplement with job descriptions for staffing the high school after approval can be accessed via the College’s website at http://www.edison.edu/echs/echs_hr_supplement.pdf.

You also may be interested in the latest statistics concerning Florida Charter Schools, provided by the Office of Independent Education and Parental Choice, Florida Department of Education. Through law enacted in 1996, charter schools are public schools of choice designed to increase parental options and provide innovative learning opportunities for students. They are authorized by sponsors, often local school districts, and face market pressure to perform in an exceptional manner.

By Statute, charter schools must fulfill the following purposes:

Improve student learning and academic achievement.

Increase learning opportunities for all students, with special emphasis on low-performing students and reading.

Encourage the use of innovative learning methods.

Require the measurement of learning outcomes.

Innovations in learning opportunities for students and teachers are encouraged.

From five schools in 1996-1997, the number of Florida charter schools has grown to 358 in 2007-08. Florida ranks third in the nation in charter school enrollment, with over 104,000 students enrolled last school year. In 2007-08, 41 school districts and one state university sponsored charter schools. Student demographics are as follows:

50% are elementary students

40% are white, 23% African-American, 31% Hispanic and 6% other ethnicities

15% are students with disabilities

38% are eligible for free and/or reduced-price lunch

I extend a heartfelt thank you to members of the ECHS Task Force for their dedicated efforts toward establishing Edison State College’s first collegiate high school.
