PUNTA GORDA — Edison Collegiate High School has reached another milestone in becoming a public school by conducting a lottery selection of applications for the charter school’s inaugural ninth-grade class.

The maximum number of students who could be accepted into the class was 100. Because 139 applications were received by the March 20 deadline, the information technology department at the Lee Campus of Edison State College was charged with orchestrating the application lottery.

The top 100 students received a phone call explaining that they were selected and their acceptance letter was mailed out last week. The letter contained a commitment form and a self-addressed return envelope, which is due back to the school today. As of Thursday afternoon, Principal Tammi Harvey has received between 85 and 90 commitments. “It tells me these kids really want to be here,” Harvey said. “I feel like we’re a school now. I have names and I have faces.”

If a selected student decides not to attend the collegiate high school, his spot will be taken by a student on the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.

Currently, there are 46 students on the waiting list, as applications have continued to be submitted to the school. In addition to finding out who will be in the student body, the school has been interviewing applicants for the guidance counselor position. Also, advertisements for teachers will be posted on the college’s Web site at https://jobs.edison.edu beginning next week.
